[Lilug] How to make a automake script?

Does anyone know how to set up a configure script for a package and can
give a talk at a lilug meeting? I not thinking about using such script
but writing it. What goes into the Makefile.am and Makefile.in file?

I looked for tutorials on the web but I could not find anything useful.
They all talked about the history of AM, but very little about the
concepts and basic examples. A good tutorial would help me.
