Just the opposite.  Latest Gnome is v3.  MATE is a fork at the end of
Gnome2's life.  It keeps the more traditional "desktop metaphors" that
Unity and Gnome3's "Gnome Shell" have to, some extent, left behind.  I
actually like both Unity and Gnome Shell but I also prefer a somewhat
fringe window manager (Sawfish) which meshes better with MATE than Unity
or Gnome Shell.  Variety is the spice of life.
