[Lilug-dev-sig] Locating the group once at panera

Thanks.. I was interested in the particular topic in every case I attended, if only to learn, and didn’t really talk about other topics.. But for the si-sig what they told me specifically is that sometimes they talk about vulnerabilities in systems, or may have something where a password to a private system is shown to make things simple, and as a result if you weren’t working as a sysadmin, they didn’t really trust you with this information.

I completely understand. I can't speak for Si-sig because I personally have never been to one. I think the selectivity is only applied when it comes to what the group will talk about. If you are a gardener and you want to come to a general meeting to learn about Linux or to Dev-sig to learn about programming, you will be welcomed. But if you want everyone to spend their time talking about gardening, then you are in the wrong place.

I think the idea behind the sigs is that they provide a forum for people with interests in those specialties to get down to nitty-gritty details if they want. Whereas Lilug general meetings make an attempt to provide content that is useful for experts and non-experts alike. So, I think someone saying "this is too technical" may be a valid criticism at a general meeting, but not so much at a sig meeting.

p.s. part of the reason I asked was that when I went to a si-sig meeting years ago, just once, they said it was preferred that only sysadmins attend those meetings, though technically because they accept charitable status they could not turn away anyone... But what that meant to me was that you’re welcome to come, but you’re not really welcome. In all honesty, all the people at that meeting were very friendly anyway, and I almost walked away with someone suggesting I apply for a job where they worked (not sure where now, one of the labs)..

http://lilug.org/wiki/Devsig also says “Devsig is for developers of applications on Linux or other open OS platforms. Meetings are informal and friendly. “ and as a result I didn’t feel comfortable attending if the meeting wasn’t “for” me. I’d love to learn either way.

  Hi Rob,

there is no need to be "considered" anything to come to a meeting. All you really need to be is interested. If you think hearing about the topics would be enjoyable then I say it is worth coming out. To me, a big part of the idea behind the group is to promote learning. The meetings aren't about gurus sitting around and congratulating each other on how awesome they are.

The Dev-sig meetings are really informal. In my experience, we end up at tables just to the left of the door by the front glass (this is a convenient place to plug in your laptop). Dev-sig is a good place to talk about your project and what you are trying to achieve and maybe pick up some suggestions.

Directions for all the meetings are here: http://lilug.org/wiki/Directions

  Hope to see you,

I’m wondering, if my primary use of Linux is on an android phone (I had an install of linux on my laptop but it’s not booting at the moment and needs I presume a reinstall...) am I considered a linux user...

And if I just started experimenting with writing apps for the android platform (I started on a tetris game yesterday and am almost done with the core functionality, it’s just a matter of trudging thru the rest), and that development is done in Java, am I considered an open source OS application developer?

If the answer is yes, I’d like to come to the meeting thursday, and maybe even tonight’s main LILUG meeting, if I can find time and find them.

Thursday night more particularly because as luck would have it I’m home alone that night (my parents have a christmas party in the city) so I might as well get out of the house.. I honestly don’t have much planned for tonight either other than maybe watching the biggest loser finale, but that’ll be on io’s free NBC Prime Time on Demand service the next day if I really want to see it and I’m disabled/don’t work-for-a-living.

The only concern, or main concern, is that the meeting is at a Panera and I’m not sure I’ll recognize any of the people at the meeting as I haven’t gone to one of these in about 2 years... Back then they were at some office conference room. Will I recognize any of the old faces there, and if not when I get to Panera, how will I know I’m at the right place?

    Rob
