Pidgin works fine on windows as well if you want one less thing to support.
Before gmail I used miranda (http://www.miranda-im.org/) on windows. It sits
in the systray and windows don't popup. I've had trouble making it not
complain at startup if you didn't have an AIM account configured, and the
newer versions use a vista like skin by default even if your not using
vista.

Wes explained the case for jabber quite well. If you do gi with an outside
service, consider an appliance that uses jabber. Many exist, and that gives
you the flexibility of any client you want. One downside to jabber is
apparently there is no free blackberry client if thats important.
